BEAUTIFUL railway station gets a new platform
Third time's a charm ... or in my case the third video! That´s because it took me three videos until I have finished at least two of my platforms. This video combines the accomplishment of 4 days worth of work. Prepping the steel platform edge, getting the lanterns ready to be installed and "paving" the platform. I am also getting back to my power supply which is finally wired by my electrician.

Fabricating a rounded steel edge
Переглядів 3,3 тис.14 днів тому
Todays weather conditions don´t allow for any real outside projects. That´s why I deviate to a different part of the layout where I can build one more platform edge that is small enough to fabricate inside. I am using 40 x 40mm angle iron which I am cutting, bending and welding to the desired shape. Finally I will test fit it on the layout to make sure it fits properly.

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway 2 дні тому

      I was wondering why no one asked this question up to this video. Short answer is I want it to rust. I like the looks of the rust red steel edge and the stone paving. The steel will be fine for many many years even without paint.

  • @paolobona6257
    @paolobona6257 3 дні тому

    Very good job. I also used a primer glue to fix the little stones. It's expensive but fantastic as it allow the water to drain without forming puddle. Fantastic is the iron border you used. Unfortunately I 've no iron soldering tools and experience. Why don't you protect the iron with antirust paint? Very useful the part on the electrical connection. Could you explain better the electrical supply scheme. Which kind of transformer 220v-24v are you using? I see you put many switch before the transformer and I wonder why

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway 2 дні тому

      Thank you for your interest. I want the steel edge to rust so it gets a rust red color. It will be fine for many years even without paint since this is very thick steel and it won´t rust very fast due to the dry climate and no standing water on it. I have build a similar edge 5 years ago and beside the surface rust it is in very good shape. I made a video about the installation of my electrical supply, this might give you some answers. ua-cam.com/video/chWWlh3tEEE/v-deo.html The many switches in front of the transformer all have a reason. I have 2 transformer so I have two on/off switches, one for each of them. Those are mounted to the right. In the middle there are 2 breaker units, each for every transformer. And last but not least there is a RCD "Residual Current Device". Breaker units and RCD are mandetory in Germany for such a installation, those will be constantly switched on. I will use the two switches to power on or off my whole layout.

    Hi Robert, fantastic progress. I was wondering why you needed to weld the slots on the curve - weather protection?

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway 6 днів тому

      Hey! Tank´s for the question ... As long as the slots are not welded the steel is free to bend to some degree. I used very tight tolerances between the platform edge and the track so even a slight change in curve radius would be a big problem. To be save I decided to weld every single slot shut so it is one continous steel structure.

    With the weather this year, always good to have a back-up plan. How do you deal with the leaves on the tracks? You pick them one by one? You use a garden blower / vacuum machine or you have some special track cleaner like «Die Gartenbahner » produce? Or the track inspectors pick them up :-)

      The first platform will stay as is for now, changing it to a real curve radius instead of two bends would mean a lot of extra work. It doesn´t look to bad in my opinion altough it could be better. Much more interesting will be the second, long platform which will be half staight and half in a curve on both sides. On that I will definitely try to make a nice even curve with the platform edge like I have done in this video!

    • @summitrailway

      My garden railroad hobby started around 2011. I made a video about that if you are interested... ua-cam.com/video/6Nv5H5GT_G8/v-deo.html The cost varies a lot, depending on what you want to accomplish. The good thing is you can start very small and get bigger over time. On this channel you are watching me building my third layout. At this point I know what I want and I am shooting directely for the final layout build instead of starting slow and making changes to it over years. That means you have a lot of inital cost. But for any beginner I would highly recommend to start nice and simple which brings the cost down to a few thousand euro or dollar.

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway 16 днів тому

      That is right, thanks for pointing this out!

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway 16 днів тому

      This might be true, but like I described above I am going over the top with this layout right from the beginning since I know exactely what I want. That means hight inital cost, slow progress due to the high amount of labor involved and lots of complex planning. If you are starting with this hobby this is absolutely the wrong approach. To get started I would estimate about 2 to 3k, after that you can grow your layout and rolling stock at your own pace.

    You keep surprising me. Using steel! That is a smart choice! Many garden railways use standard paving stones, or concrete borders, cobbles, etc. This works but does not look prototypical. Here you could build the shape you needed. And it’s here to stay! I wonder how you will fill the volume of the platform, but that is for a future video, Looking forward to see it! Great work!

    • @summitrailway
      @summitrailway 24 дні тому

      I have been there, using paving stones, cobbles and so on is not a bad solution but it always looks a little bit strange. Several years ago I was using concrete for every plattform I build, it works great and you can build every form imaginable. It was the best solution until I had the idea for this... Very strong and precise edge that is actually straight and doesn´t move around like individual stones. This time I will fill the platform with a new technique that I have never used bevor. It will be a surprise for both of us but if it works it will look fantastic!

  • @darkknighte

      Thank you! I can only encurage you to try something even without the right skill set. To fill in the platform I will use a new technique that I have never tried bevore but it should look great. If it doesn´t work it will be concrete...

      That´s not a bad idea but im not sure if it will fit to the flair of my station. I will try it without and consider it later on...

    Awesome! I love how this is progressing. You’re doing an excellent job. I am wondering what the chicken inspectors think of it, though…

      Thank you very much! The chicken inspectors had no interest in this project what so ever since it was loud and dusty around the workside. They approved it afterwards :)

    Robert, nice loco repair video. Glad you’re able to find the new gears. Good as new now. 👍 Question can you run both loco in consist or you power each loco separately? Ron//

      Right now you can get hold of these gears relativity easily, there have been other times. My friend had the same problem years ago and he searched months until he got the spare parts. Each loco is fully independent, they each have a decoder and speaker and can be run stand alone. I use the Massoth multi traction function to run both together.
